Utilizing Lean Six Sigma Tools and Techniques to Improve Healthcare Outcomes
The national standard for blood culture contamination is 3%. A multi-departmental diverse team of professionals gathered to focus on the blood collection process. They looked at utilizing Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques along with the DMAIC methodology to reduce blood culture contaminations. They used root cause analysis to determine where the problems were in current state and built long-term sustainable solutions, including standard works, that addressed the problems found. The blood culture contaminations rate went from over 5% to less than 1% for over a year.
