Location: University Club - 10th Floor of the Fifth / Third Building - 111 Lyon St NW # 1025, Grand Rapids

Speaker:  Royce Coffee

Topic:  Stress and the Project Team

Description:  Is there such a thing as “Project Stress”?  Does a project itself really feel stress, or is it all those that are associated with the project, primarily the members of the project team and the PM?  Obviously, the project itself doesn’t feel anything, but it’s success is completely dependent on the hard work and professionalism of the team and their ability to deal with the stress that comes along with the project.     The Marine Corps is similar in that, as an institution, leaders only recognize the effects of stress when it concerns the Marines themselves that are assigned missions (or projects) that trigger stress.  There are mitigation techniques that can help in reducing and controlling stress and allowing the best performance possible from the team to surface.  The practices presented do not require any equipment, going to a gym or an inordinate amount of time.  These practices are simple, effective and represent a great return on the effort invested.

PDU:  Leadership 1.0

Speaker Bio:  While on active duty for more than 36 years, Sergeant Major Coffee served in a number of diversified commands, as well as multiple combat tours, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was the Senior Enlisted Leader of Marine Forces Pacific, Marine Central Command and Marine Forces Korea, a command with over 100,000 military personnel.  His final active duty assignment was to U.S?. ? Pacific Command, where he pioneered the Command’s first foreign enlisted development program.  After retirement from the Marine Corps, he worked for Anteon Corporation and General Dynamics Information Technology as a Deputy Program Manager, Senior Program Analyst, and Professional Development Consultant for the Philippine Defense Reform Program. Sergeant Major Coffee holds a bachelor’s degree and has earned senior rankings in a variety of martial arts.  He and his daughter wrote WISER Self Defense, a book concerning situational awareness, personal safety, and self-defense techniques.
