Track 1 AM - The Back of the Napkin - Problem Solving Using Pictures

- Dan Roam

The problem? Too many complex problems.  The solution: a sketch on the back of a napkin. In this interactive session, Dan shares his classic "Back of the Napkin" toolkit, the same tools he has used with teams at Microsoft, Boing, Intel, Wal-Mart, and the United States Senate. Come with a business problem in mind and bring a napkin and pen - nobody leaves until we've explored the basic elements of the problem and mapped out the path to an effective solution.

Track 1 PM - Blah, Blah, Blah - What To Do When Words Don't Work - Dan Roam

The problem? We talk so much that we don't think very well, The solution: Vivid Thinking. In this fast-paced session, Dan introduces his newest set of tools in the battle against complexity, misunderstanding, and boredom: Vivid Thinking.  Vivid stands for "Visual-Verbal InterDependent Thinking" - which means that our best ideas emerge only whaen we engage both our verbal and visual minds. Using his breakthrough tools "The Blah- Blameter", "Vivid Grammer", and "The Vivid Forest", Dan shows us how to find his underlying message in any idea and cut out the blah-blah-blah forever.

Track 2 AM - Leading Projects Teams from Good to Great Writing and Communication - Lisa McNeilley

Many Project Managers lose time and profitability because team members produce unclear reports.  This starts a cycle: poor writing, followed by requests for revision then slightly better writing, and additional requests for revision.  In this workshop Project Managers will learn techniques to guide their teams toward written communication that is clear, effective and productive.  The process uses three steps:

            1) setting up the writing situation,

            2) designing effective templates, and

            3) providing feedback.

Using the CASE System of Writing, this workshop will provide strategies for upfront planning so reports will be on target the first time.  Teams will define areas: Content, Audience,Structure and Editing.

Workshop activities will focus on the following:

  • Developing lists of key decision factors and steps to action (Content)
  • Defining stakeholders and their communications needs (Audience)
  • Designing and revising templates to provide effective writing guidance (Structure)
  • Defining writing standards for clarity and effectiveness (Editing)

Track 2 PM -  Breaking the Unwritten Rules for Project Managers - Mike Weber

We are creatures of habit. We think in patterns. We act in patterns. These patterns are the rules, the unwritten rules, which define how we act and what we get done. What are the Unwritten Rules that are holding you back? The habits and patterns that govern how we work and how we play. The rules that, if you could change them, would set the stage for the realization of your dreams? There are Five Universal Unwritten Rules by which we all operate. What are they? How do we break them? The recognition of patterns is the first step toward changing the habits that are holding you back. Identify the unwritten rules that you need to break to be more productive….and have more fun doing it!
